Early Heart Attack Care In The Workplace

~ Table of Contents ~

II. Introduction

Definition...
Early Heart Attack Care may be defined more precisely as early emergency cardiac care. It requires prompt treatment for persons who present with a mild type of chest discomfort.

Plan of Action...
Early Heart Attack Care is designed to:
1. Make the public aware that heart attacks have beginnings with symptoms that are present in at least 60% of all cases.
2. Teach lay persons to identify these symptoms in another person and to intervene, moving from a passive observer and listener to an active Early Heart Attack Care Giver.
3. Motivate friends and family to act promptly at this early stage to prevent sudden death or severe damage to the heart. Potential patients need to be convinced to act immediately by having the symptoms "checked out" in the nearest hospital setting.

III. Community Action

The solution to solving heart attack deaths no longer resides completely within the field of medicine. The answer lies more in the delivery of the system. It is in this area that together - the home, the school, and the health care community can make a difference. In fact, is only by employing the efforts and awareness of this broad community paradigm that we can even begin to solve the heart attack problem. Heart attacks take the lives of more Americans each year than the total number of soldiers killed in past wars.

Most people do not realize that this need not occur. The answer lies not within the hospital with more and better drugs, technology, or surgery, but in greater public awareness and a more effective response system.
