Introduction | Know the Warnings | Three Ways To Be a Heart Saver Heart Attacks Have Beginnings Be Persistent | Spread the Word Dear Friend, If you are reading this booklet--and perhaps have listened to the audiotape that goes with it--you are probably at least somewhat concerned about the dangers of heart attack. For as long as anyone can remember, heart attack has been the number-one killer in America. Heart attacks claim some 600,000 lives in this country every year. That's more than all the soldiers killed in all the wars America has ever fought. And that's why we are fighting a war right now, against this disease. There's some good news in the fight against heart attack. We have a new weapon--information. What's more, it is information that all citizens can use to help ourselves, our families, our coworkers, our friends. We are now aware that more than half of the people who suffer from major heart attacks have some mild to moderate warning symptoms in advance, perhaps lasting a few hours to a few days. If we can teach people to recognize these symptoms and seek medical help right away, they could receive medicines that are known to prevent major heart attacks and the serious heart damage--even death they bring. Just think: If half of those who die of heart attack in an average year could recognize their early symptoms and received this treatment, we could save 300,006 lives every year! I want to enlist you in the war against heart attack. Armed with the information in this booklet (and the audiotape), you could save your own life or the life of someone you love. Can I count on you? Dr. Raymond D. Bahr, M.D.
