Heart Attacks Have Beginnings
You have heard about CPR, but have
you heard about EHAC? It stands for Early Heart Attack Care. Here’s
what you need to know...
- Early heart attack care (EHAC) is for the living, while cardiopulmonary
resuscitation (CPR) is a strategy for the dying.
- If a heart attack is recognized in early stages, there may
be no need for CPR, defibrillation or advanced care.
- Heart attacks are the number one killer of the adult population
in the United States.
- There are over 4,000 heart attacks every day in the U.S.,
accounting for 600,000 deaths per year.
African Americans:
- African Americans have the highest death rate from heart disease
of any racial and ethnic group in the country.
- Congestive heart failure is much higher
at younger ages in African Americans.
- High blood pressure (hypertension) is more prevalent among
African American men and women compared to other racial and
ethnic groups.
If heart attack is not to be
the number one killer of adult African Americans by the turn of
the century, then the time has come for greater emphasis on early
recognition. Our goal is to make early heart attack care, "EHAC,"
a household word in an effort to reduce the number of lives lost
to heart attacks each year.
